The 2005 edition has 54 new articles, 47 replacement articles, and 186 articles with major revisions. There are also 118 new illustrations and five new maps. Recent historical developments led to major revision of the 300-page article United States, reflected in the "Modern Nation" and "International Relations and Diplomacy" sections. In the international arena, the article Saudi Arabia has been replaced and has a new map and color illustrations. Other articles related to the Middle East Algeria, Iraq, Israel, and Libya have been revised, too. New entries include Biometry and Biometrics; Department store; E-mail; Kerry, John Forbes; Mengele, Josef; Ondaatje, Michael, O'Neal, Shaquille; and Richler, Mordecai.
