Reviews:

"Encyclopedia Americana, known for its scholarly coverage and emphasis on American culture, was first published in 1829. The new edition has 21 new articles, 19 replacement articles, and 1,080 articles with major and minor revisions. There are also 69 new illustrations and 2 new maps. Recent historical developments led to major revisions of material on the U.S. Articles on Galveston, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Orleans, and Pascagoula were revised to reflect the impact of Hurricane Katrina. The main article on the U.S. has major new subarticles on the history of immigration, the American way of life, and the characteristics of the population. In the international arena, the events in the Middle East necessitated revision of the articles on Iran, Israel, Lebanon, the Palestine Liberation Organization, and Syria. The tsunami in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, the earthquake in Pakistan, the civil unrest in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, and the new civil war in Sudan are noted.

Entries new to the print encyclopedia include Computer virus; Disability; Rice, Condoleezza; and Satellite television and radio. Among the replacement articles are Hussein, Saddam; Interior design; Submarine; and Transsexualism.Interior design was particularly in need of a face-lift; the old article ended somewhere in the mid–twentieth century. The new (much shorter) article brings design into the new millennium and has 14 of the 56 new color photographs that were added to the set. Around 30 articles, among them Coins and coin collecting and all articles related to military service, received major revisions. More than 20 new authors joined the roster of contributors.

Especially with its extensive coverage of American studies, Encyclopedia Americana is an excellent resource for high-school, public, and academic libraries." Booklist, September 15, 2006.
