The Encyclopedia of Islam

The Encyclopaedia of Islam (New Edition) describes the present state of our knowledge of the Islamic World. It is an essential reference tool, an invaluable key to learning about the world of Islam, and the authoritative source covers not only the religion, but also on the believers and the regions in which the religion flourishes. It contains articles on distinguished Muslims of every era and origin, on tribes and dynasties, crafts and sciences, political and religious institutions, geography, ethnography, flora and fauna of the various countries and on the history, topography and monuments of the major towns and cities. In its geographical and historical scope this resource encompasses the old Arabo-Islamic empire, the Islamic countries of the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Indonesia, as well as the Ottoman Empire and other countries. The Encyclopaedia of Islam is a comprehensive and important educational tool on Islam.

The New Edition is the product of a 50-year project beginning in 1954 and ending with the publication of the twelfth volume in 2005. The encyclopedia is published in double fascicules of 112 pages. Eight double fascicules make up each volume. Upon completion of a volume, covers and prelims were provided for binding.
